Sometimes it is difficult to brainstorm drawing ideas and facing the blank page can be discouraging to any artist. Deciding what to draw can sometimes be challenging, but we can agree that the more you draw, the better you get. These drawing ideas will help you break through your creative block:

Doodle

One of the best ways to get over an artist block is to let your imagination flow and just doodle. If you let go of your expectations you might be surprised to see where the moment takes you, even if you just make squiggles. Another great warmup is to do a three-minute sketch of something in site. You can even make a self-portrait if you turn the web cam on and watch the screen or look in a mirror. Although it is a short time, you can test yourself and see how much you can put down when you don’t expect it to come out well.

Look for drawing ideas inside yourself

Introspection can be a powerful tool available at any moment. Think about what is important to you and how you feel right now and translate it into images. Daydreaming is another way to come up with drawing ideas. Many times we find yourself standing in line or stuck in an elevator without nothing to do. Imagine yourself drawing very detailed images in these moments and next time you do it for real it will come natural.

Draw from a photograph or famous painting

Drawing from a real subject is a great idea if you are going for accuracy because the color, texture and shape are best captured from real objects or scenery. A photograph is the most accessible form where you can come up with drawing ideas. Look around the house for interesting photos you took or browse the internet. Photographs are good for proportions and details, although the colors are not very accurate. If you really want to strengthen your skills and understand how great artists achieved composition and depth, draw by a classical master such as Leonardo Da Vinci or Rembrandt.

Abstract drawings

When you run out of drawing ideas, abstract shapes and patterns can be used to express deep feelings that you might not even be aware of. Arrange various shapes into a composition that you find dynamic and interesting. Try painting music that you like or sounds that you hear. Perceiving music as colors is a process called synesthesia, a rare process that could be as prevalent as 1 in 23 persons. Even if you do not have this ability, imagine what the music would look like. Try combining various colors and allow yourself to associate colors with scenes, moods and objects.
